Capybarapy

What happens when you remove competition from gaming and replace it with calm?

Capybarapy is an award-winning experiential campaign created for Hoegaarden that reimagines gaming as a form of relaxation. Recently shortlisted at the Cannes Lions in Entertainment for Gaming, the campaign challenged traditional gameplay by replacing speed, skill and competition with a simple, tactile interaction: gently stroking a giant capybara.

Inspired by the capybara's status as a cultural symbol of calm across Chinese social media, Capybarapy transformed Hoegaarden's brand promise of relaxation into a playable experience. Visitors unlocked the game by purchasing a Hoegaarden beer, then interacted with a soft capybara installation that rewarded slow, soothing behaviour instead of fast reflexes. In busy bars filled with loud music and high-energy activations, this quiet contradiction became the entertainment.

Rather than chasing scores or victories, the experience encouraged participation, filming and sharing. The unexpected sight of people calmly stroking a giant capybara in the middle of a nightlife venue created naturally funny, highly shareable content that spread organically across social media.
